For thousands of years, laughter has brought joy to people of all ages. Did you know that World Smile Day falls on the first Friday of October? It’s a fun day to spread joy and share smiles with everyone around us. This day is dedicated to “joy and acts of kindness.” This year, World Smile Day is being celebrated on October 4.

It all began in 1963, when an artist from Worcester, Massachusetts—Harvey Ball—created an image of a smiling face. As time went on, that image evolved into a symbol of kindness and happiness. But commercialisation took over. Harvey noticed that the smiling face was being used in ways that altered its original meaning. Concerned, he thought—why not dedicate a day to smiles? A day to spread joy and practice kindness. And so, it began.

The first World Smile Day was observed in 1999 in Worcester. The main goal was to spread a message of kindness among people. Since then, the day has been celebrated every year. Harvey Ball passed away in 2001, and in his memory, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established. This foundation continues to sponsor World Smile Day every year.
